Dental Filling in Dubai

What is a Dental Filling?

Dental Fillings are used to rebuild or re-establish teeth that are missing tooth structure or have been damaged by decay or fracture. They help to restore prime functioning and can prevent them from further rotting while maintaining optimum aesthetics.

When a cavity or decay starts inside a tooth, it is often detected by x-ray or visual exam first before you feel any pain. It is very important that the cavity or decay is caught early and replaced with a filling before it progresses further. Often, by the time patients feel symptoms including tooth pain and call for a dental appointment, the decay has progressed much further and often requires more treatment including a root canal.

Tooth Colored Fillings

At The DentalSPA in Dubai, we use only tooth-colored filling materials to restore your teeth. Today’s society understands that a white, brighter smile is not only visually appealing, it’s also a sign of overall health and wellness. Therefore, Tooth-colored fillings are now used more often than amalgam or gold fillings.

There are several factors that will be considered in deciding which material will be best including the location of the tooth needing to be filled and the amount of decay. Tooth colored fillings can be closely matched to the color of existing teeth and they also chemically bond to the tooth structure, which strengthens and supports the tooth.

The most common materials used by General and Cosmetic Dentists today are tooth colored Composite and Ceramic fillings

Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are tooth colored and can be matched to the patient’s existing teeth color. They are made of a resin and plastic material that is placed into the cavity and then using a blue “curing” light, they are cemented or hardened to the tooth. They are typically used in small to mid size cavities and in both front or back teeth. Whilst very popular with Dentists and aesthetically pleasing, composite fillings occasionally need to be replaced after 5-10 years.

Ceramic Fillings

Ceramic Fillings are also tooth colored and are made of porcelain. Whilst they are durable, aesthetically attractive and more resistant to staining, Ceramic fillings are typically more expensive than composite fillings. They are often used to fill larger cavities and are typically referred to as inlays or onlays.

It’s important to remember that prevention is the key. No dental filling or dental restoration lasts forever and the best dental filling is NO dental filling.

Here is a reminder of the things you can do to prevent the need for you to have a dental filling:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss everyday
  • Eat a well balanced diet
  • Visit the dentist and hygienist regularly

Do I Need a Tooth Filling?

While your dentist is the best person to tell if you need a tooth filling or dental restoration for sure, there are some signs and symptoms that are common and could be a warning that you may require a dental filling.

Sign That You Need Dental Filling

  • Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures or sweet, sticky and sour foods
  • Tooth pain (throbbing or sharp)
  • Tooth pain when you bite down or chew
  • A visible hole or dark spot on your tooth. Some holes can be felt with the tongue
  • During flossing, the string tears each time you floss a particular tooth
  • Food sticks to or between certain teeth
  • An existing tooth filling is cracked or broken
  • You’ve lost a tooth filling
  • Your tooth is chipped or broken

Laser Fillings vs Traditional drill fillings

Dental lasers do not require anesthesia and cause no pain in comparison to the traditional dentist’s drill. Lasers can also target specific areas of the tooth or gum, without causing harm to surrounding tooth, resulting in a more precise overall treatment. Recovery time is often much less than when traditional treatment is carried out and Patients often feel more at ease and comfortable throughout the procedure eliminating the complaints and ill feeling about dentistry in general. Of course, as with all technology advances, there are limitations. Laser Dentistry can not be used on teeth that have previously had a filling or to fill cavities that are located between teeth.

The benefits of laser fillings definitely outweigh the negative. Laser fillings generally take much less time than traditional fillings and cause far less patient anxiety and discomfort. The only real disadvantage of laser dentistry is that it is more expensive.

Making sure you have a skilled and qualified laser Dentist is also key in maintaining ultimate dental health.
