Melasma, (aka The mask of pregnancy), is particularly common in women, especially pregnant women and women who are taking oral or patch contraceptives. Women who take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medications also commonly suffer from Melasma.
We asked Dr. Iman Fathi, Specialist Dermatologist, for her recommendations to help to control Melasma.
What is Melasma?
“It’s a very common skin problem”, says Dr. Iman Fathi, “which appears as brownish-grey patches on the face and sun exposed skin areas.”
“Both women and men with darker skin color are more likely to get Melasma, however as hormones seem to trigger Melasma, Pregnant women are more susceptible.”
Melasma increases during the summer months and sun protection is one of the most common treatments.
Here are some tips to help you get a more even skin tone.
Use a broad spectrum and water resistant sun block with SPF 30 or higher which contains a physical sun protection agents such as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide 15 minutes before sun exposure and re-apply every 2 hours.
Use a wide brimmed hat as sun block cream alone might not be enough.
Avoid skin care products which irritate the skin as they can aggravate Melasma.
