You might be shocked to know what goes on inside your mouth and how it affects your overall health and wellness.
It’s not something we like to think about, but there are 100’s of different types of bacteria that live in our mouth and often at the same time!
The obvious solution in keeping our mouth clean is to brush our teeth after every meal or at least twice a day; in the morning and then again before going to bed.
However, even if you a brushing two or three times a day, you’re only cleaning about 60% of your teeth by brushing alone and that’s if you are brushing correctly and for the recommended two minutes!
So what else can you do to ensure you are cleaning the remaining 40%? That’s right, Floss like a boss!
Even if you brush twice a day, there are hard to reach places your toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing is the most common way to clean in between your teeth where food can get trapped and cause bad breath.
We can’t stress enough the importance of making sure you add flossing into your daily oral care routine.
If you notice that your gums bleed when brushing or flossing, you may have gingivitis. One of the problems associated with gingivitis is that it allows bacteria to enter your bloodstream and attack your organs. Simply by flossing daily, you will reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease as well as diabetes.
Aside from the health benefits of flossing regularly, making sure you floss daily will save you money in the long run. Believe it or not, most major dental issues start from poor oral hygiene, so developing good flossing habits is one of the best preemptive actions you can take to avoid dental procedures such as dental fillings and root canals.
How to Floss Properly
- Cut off a piece of floss. The recommended length is approximately 40-45cm (about 16-18 inches) and wind most of it around each middle finger, leaving some floss to work with.
- Make sure you wrap the floss around your middle finger, instead of your index finger. That way, you can use your index fingers and thumbs to manipulate the floss better at difficult angles, and get further behind to the back teeth.
- Once the floss in in between the teeth, gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth making sure you go just beneath the gum-line. Be careful not to force it so you don’t bruise or cut your gums.
- Make sure you always use a clean side to floss each tooth so that removed bacteria does not got back in between your teeth.
Don’t worry if it seems uncomfortable at the beginning, practice makes perfect!
The combination of daily flossing with twice daily brushing will go a long way toward a bright, beautiful and healthy smile.
