What Is Dental Phobia?
Otherwise known as ‘dental fear’, Dental Phobia is a real problem for a lot of people. Also called odontophobia, dentophobia and dental anxiety – dental phobia is the fear of dentistry and of receiving dental care. It’s a common problem that can bring adults to their knees and can leave children in hysterics at the thought of an upcoming visit! Perhaps you know someone that is also affected by it?
According to Colgate, dental anxiety and phobia is extremely common and it’s been estimated that 9% to 15% of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of this crippling anxiety and fear. In a survey completed by the British Dental Health Foundation, 36% of those who didn’t see a dentist regularly said that fear was the main reason. Symptoms include the following – a sense of uneasiness when it’s time for their appointments, unfounded worries or fears and in some cases, panic attacks.
We spoke to Maryanne Allan*, who was, up until recently classed as ‘dental phobic’. According to Maryanne, her fear of going to the dentist started with an overly painful extracting in her early teens where the dentist was incredibly rough with the removal of her one of her molars. The extraction resulted in extreme pain and discomfort during the visit, swelling and bruising after and mild panic attacks on her following visits.
Fast forward a number of years and Maryanne found a dental practice in her hometown that specialize in laser dentistry, meaning in most cases they don’t need to use drills or anesthetic when treating her dental problems.
Patients, like Maryanne, whom suffer from dental phobia will generally suffer from poorer health and wellbeing. Inadequate dental health over a long period of time can also have an overall detrimental effect on your health and wellbeing.
Dentists are your Friends
While dental phobia is increasingly common, your dentist should not be feared! We’ve put together the top 3 reasons why you SHOULDN’T fear your dentist and why you SHOULD visit regularly!
Number 1: HIGHLY TRAINED PROFESSIONALS – Dentists in most parts of the world will train for over 10 years to become the best in their field. Their expertise, skill and profession is not down to luck, they’ve worked hard at their career and will take every step towards a painless treatment for you!
Number 2: NEW AGE TECHNOLOGY – Like The DentalSPA in Dubai, it’s becoming more common for dental practices to introduce laser technology. Laser technology in general and cosmetic dentistry means a 100% painless, noiseless and drill-free treatment in most cases.
Number 3: REGULAR CHECK UPS – If you’re visiting the dentist more regularly, then the chances of having any major issues that require treatment are slim-to-none! We recommend heading to your dentist every six months to ensure that your teeth are in tip-top shape, all year round.
